I’ve been tossing around the idea for awhile to open a high yield online savings account. I like seeing a high balance in my sucky 0% US Bank accounts, but it’s not worth it.
It’s through FNBO Direct. The interest will only be like $300 a year at 3.5% , but it’s better than nothing, right?

I am thinking about joining one. If anyone in the Omaha area is a member, let me know and share your experience.

I am an accountant, so I say I manage my money better than a lot of people, but I still don’t keep track of it as well as I used to. I came across an article reviewing this site, MInt.com and decided to check it out. I input all of my information (credit card, bank, etc), the site retrieves the data & transactions automatically and then summarizes it into pretty pie charts and lists.
Another feature I value more than the color coded pie charts is the reminder service. I get an SMS message when my credit cards are due, which means I don’t forget to make a payment.
It still has some work to do, especially for payees it doesn’t recognize, but I think it has potential. They make their money through referral advertising (e.g., Following their suggestion to open an ETrade savings account), which isn’t too intrusive. However, I’m sure that will change if/when they get bought out.
However, even though I use this service, I still don’t pay attention or care where my money goes as long as the bank statement shows more cash at the beginning end of month vs. end beginning of month.
It’s a start though.
Running June 4, 2008

Sitting in a cube for 40 hours a week quickly got me out of shape. Thus, I need to start doing some actual running (none of that treadmill BS). I ran a pilot mile this evening and had to push myself to get the final 1/4 mile done. Two years ago I was doing BS 5k runs on the treadmill without too much trouble.
I think I am going to try this regiment and see how far I get:

I started reading this about a year ago and love it. The best analogy I can come up with is it’s like Newsweek, only BBC style. The articles are in-depth, well written and cover much more subject matter than a lot of our print media does.
It’s amazing how outwardly focused the world media is vs. the media here in the US.
Don’t Ever be Comfortable May 31, 2008

How many people do you know that are comfortable in the position they live in?
I’m asking this because I went to a party last night at a friend of the family’s who’s son was going into the Army. I looked at the socioeconomic environment around me, and started thinking why are most of these rational adults, many with families comfortable here for years on end?
What could be the cause: The Government, Corporate America, Big OIl. Wal-Mart, the man? NO! It all lies in the individual! Success in life is achieved largely through motivation & willingness to learn.
I have always been an advocate of college, but if you apply yourself well enough, it’s not needed. The system is built to let the individual succeed if they want to. You can take college courses and get a tax credit, take loans out for that education and deduct the interest, open a small business and take advantage of many tax breaks, move to a “better pasture” and take a deduction on your moving expenses…it’s endless.
There are no excuses. Just get out there and keep improving yourself.
Dissappointing TV October 25, 2007

Since I have most evenings off nowadays I have had the chance to watch more and more TV. Has it really gotten this bad?
The two staple channels I watch: The History Channel & Discovery Channel have really gone downhill. I swear, they repeat the same low quality programming – most of it reality based. It probably took Discovery like 6 months after the Deadliest Catch season ended to stop continuously airing reruns. History was a little better with ending the nonstop Ice Road Truckers repeats after 3-4 months.
What made it worse for Discovery is that they put salt in the crab wounds by following the Deadliest Catch reruns with a show mirroring the same thing only they substituted Lobster for the catch and Maine for the state.
I guess I just remember the days when I would turn to these channels and learn something cool most of the time instead of the reality crap they put on the networks.
Hopefully with the IN Demand technology they have now I can eventually just pick and choose the shows I watch. But that is just wishful thinking.
Tax Prep Class Rant October 23, 2007

One of the partners at the CPA firm I work at the first day suggested that I take a tax prep course though one of the big tax preperation companies. It started on the day I began working for my CPA firm and goes until the middle of November.
There are a few normal people who are taking it but a vast majority of them are annoying or just plain weird.
One lady in her 40’s probably has been working for this company for years as a tax preparer yet is taking the Tax Prep 101 again – probably to make herself feel smarter and more important than she really is. This individual has to insert her knowdlege on everything and runs around during computer exercises “checking on everyone.” I have to restrain myself when she asks me if I am okay and tries to give advice. Yes, lady, that’s great I can hit Alt+C and carry the info over to the hash totals, I DON’T F***ING CARE!!! IT’S EASY ENOUGH TO JUST COPY THE NUMBERS INTO THE BOX.
I was about ready to verbally lash out at her a couple weeks ago when she was talking about how hard it was the first time she took the class. How she was working full time (probably as a prostitute) too…blah blah blah. I can only imagine how she would handle in a real college.
Her blonde co-worker, another multi-year faithful employee of this place creeps me out. I was walking in while they were smoking before the thing started a couple weeks ago and she greeted me with a “hey baby!” **shudders**
I guess I get cranky before, during and after sitting there for 3 agonizing hours learning about tax – most of which I already learned in college.
Another thing that irritates me about the thing is that it’s a big recruiting session. I had to get approval on Day 1 to take it since I work for a CPA firm and it might violate their “No Competitor Employees” policy.
Plus the job just isn’t appealing. You get to do crappy tax returns, only make $8-12/hr and lose your job after April. I can go be a mall santa, sit in a chair and do nothing for that much for seasonal work.
Oh well, at least I can take comfort knowing that in November I will be done with it. I have learned more about taxes from struggling on the Corporate, Partnership and Non-Profit returns then I did taking this class so far.
The End.
Education October 21, 2007

I spent 45 minutes of my life yesterday watching some John Stossel (20/20) segment about education. Essentially he laid the case that our kids are getting a subpar education compared to the rest of the world due to the government run system we have. Stossel argues that a more free market approach to educaiton would yield better results.
I agree with a lot of what he says. Right now the school system is akin to a monopoly. There is little incentive to get better and improve. Yes, the school board can change but that is an election cycle based decision. Nothing really can be done to quickly deal with bad teachers who perform poorly or schools when they are just bad in general.
If we shift the system to more of a free market approach, that will introduce competition and increase efficency which will lead to better test results. I know it’s a scary thought that your kids school might go out of business, but hey you can just pick up and move to another one right?
In addition, it could allow for a greater variety of schools. I know my biggest problem with high school was that I unmotivated and bored. If I could have gone to a school that tailored more towards my interests, then maybe I would have received better grades. I know I did much better in college since I could take the classes I want as long as it fit the graduation guidelines for my degree.
A voucher system which allowed the tax money to follow to any accredited school would work. People need to wake up and make it happen.
